Creating DNS records

Draft: This documentation is a work in progress (even moreso than usual)

Firstly, navigate to the zone where you want to create the records, remembering to choose "sub zones" if you are starting from cam.ac.uk

Then, how you proceed depends on the type of record

Host Record

We recommend creating host records from the IP Space side, but you can also create them here for static hosts.

Name

Just the bit before the zone name, e.g. for www.staff.botolph.cam.ac.uk in the botolph.cam.ac.uk zone you would put www.staff

Address

The IP to use

Auto Create Network

leave unchecked

Reverse Record

Usually leave checked

Override TTL

Usually leave unchecked

You can optionally create CNAME records at the same time. If "Absolute Name" is checked the software expects a fully qualified domain name, otherwise it will put the CNAME in the current zone.

It is recommended to fill in the other fields with useful information about why this record exists.

Alias Record

Also known as a CNAME, this record will cause all lookups (regardless of type) to be redirected to another name.

Name

Just the bit before the zone name, e.g. for www.staff.botolph.cam.ac.uk in the botolph.cam.ac.uk zone you would put www.staff

Host

If you are creating a CNAME to a host you can view, you can select it from the list. If it's an external host, you need to check the external host box. If the external host does not exist you will need to create it first.

It is recommended to fill in the other fields with useful information about why this record exists.

Text Record

TXT records are used for a variety of things, including domain ownership verification and email. If you are using managed mail domains you should console with the UIS mail team before replacing any existing records containing SPF information.

Name

Just the bit before the zone name, e.g. for www.staff.botolph.cam.ac.uk in the botolph.cam.ac.uk zone you would put www.staff

Text

The text to put in the record

It is recommended to fill in the other fields with useful information about why this record exists.

Mail Exchanger Record

This kind of record directs where incoming email should be routed. If you are using managed mail domains you should console with the UIS mail team before replacing any existing records.

Name

Just the bit before the zone name, e.g. for mail.staff.botolph.cam.ac.uk in the botolph.cam.ac.uk zone you would put mail.staff

However, this particular record is often used at the top level of a zone, so you might need to choose "Same as zone" to create a MX record for botolph.cam.ac.uk.

Priority

The priority of the targets (lower meaning more prioritised)

Host

If this MX points at host you can view you can select it from the list, selecting "external host" if necessary.

Other Records

The other records are for more advanced usage than the target audience of this document.

Generic Record

For any record not in the drop down list you will need to use Generic records. They work in a similar way to the record specific forms above, but you need to specify a type and raw data. There is less error checking for these records.
